Afrikaans

Social Empowerment

Afrikaans is a vibrant language, rich in idiom, literature, music, and culture. It is the home language of nearly 14% of South Africans and the third most common language in the country. Simple grammar and phonetic spelling make it easier to learn than many other languages, and it is taught at Hudson Park as a FAL (First Additional Language).

Our aim is to awaken learners to the many rewards of mastering Afrikaans through activities which encompass all aspects of language study, namely listening, reading, writing, presenting, and learning grammar.

FET Phase Notes

CORE SUBJECTS

These subjects are compulsory for all learners. They should choose one FAL (First Additional Language) and either Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, for a total of 4 core subjects.

ELECTIVE SUBJECTS

One subject should be chosen from each group, for a total of 3 elective subjects.

Career Planning

Being able to communicate confidently in Afrikaans has many benefits for a South African, both socially and in the workplace. Specific careers which require a high level of proficiency in Afrikaans include those of translator, Afrikaans teacher, lawyer, tour guide, politician, actor, journalist, and presenter (radio or television).

Support

Advanced students act as peer-group tutors and provide assistance to learners who may need it. Extra lessons are also provided by various staff members.

Our Approach

We try to bring learners to the point where they can express themselves confidently, through both the written and the spoken word, so that Afrikaans will be useful to them in real life situations. Most learners enjoy creative activities such as orals and written pieces. Many also like to read Afrikaans fiction and watch Afrikaans movies, both of which have relevance to life in South Africa.
