This subject has immense relevance. It covers a wide range of topics - including budgeting, measuring, travel time-tables, and cell phone contracts - and it teaches vital skills. Students learn to apply mathematical principles to everyday situations. They make sense of large volumes of information, and they evaluate information according to sound criteria. What they gain will stand them in good stead throughout their lives.
These subjects are compulsory for all learners. They should choose one FAL (First Additional Language) and either Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, for a total of 4 core subjects.
One subject should be chosen from each group, for a total of 3 elective subjects.
Brief notes on the subjects offered at Hudson Park in the Further Education and Training Phase can be accessed via the menu below.
Making a choice between Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy must depend on a learner's strengths. Mathematical Literacy is the more practical of the two subjects, providing hands on experience of Mathematics in our daily lives. Pure Mathematics is abstract and technical, and it can make substantial academic demands on the student.
Achieving good results in Mathematical Literacy will open doors for future study and enable entry to courses such as Design and Drawing, Finance, and Accounting. It is true that an excellent Mathematical Literacy result will be worth more than a very poor result in Mathematics.

Individual attention is given to pupils who need extra calculator training, or training in other basics of the subject. Peer-tutoring is also arranged to assist learners, and extra lessons are offered by certain teachers during examination times.
