Overview

Mathematical problem solving enables us to understand the physical, social, and economic world around us, and most of all, it teaches us to think creatively. It is a prerequisite for entry to a number of courses at tertiary level, particularly in the scientific field.

This subject affords students all the satisfaction associated with mastering a complex skill. It is a language in itself, which uses symbols and notations to decribe numerical, geometric, and graphical relationships. Learners develop their decision-making skills, as it calls for logical and critical thinking, accuracy, and an ordered approach to problem solving.

FET Phase Notes

CORE SUBJECTS

These subjects are compulsory for all learners. They should choose one FAL (First Additional Language) and either Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, for a total of 4 core subjects.

ELECTIVE SUBJECTS

One subject should be chosen from each group, for a total of 3 elective subjects.

Equipment

Each learner must have a Mathematics set and a non-graphical, non-programmable calculator. In respect of the latter, our preferred choice is a CASIO 991.

Past Examination Papers

Learners are advised to make good use of past test papers and solutions, as it is by working through these that essential skills can be polished. A large number of papers is available via this website, courtesy of the Department of Education.

Extension And Support

Pupils who excel at Mathematicians at may put their talents to use by volunteering as a peer-tutors or participating in Mathematics olympiads. Those experiencing difficulties should approach their teachers for assistance and advice.
