Since isiXhosa is the mother tongue of about 75% of the Eastern Cape’s population, the ability to converse freely in the language can hardly be over-estimated. Such ability enables us to communicate effectively, to appreciate different cultural identities, and to bridge gaps that separate us. IsiXhosa is taught at Hudson Park as a FAL (First Additional Language).
Our aim is to awaken learners to the many rewards of mastering isiXhosa through activities which encompass all aspects of language study, namely listening, reading, writing, presenting, and learning grammar.
These subjects are compulsory for all learners. They should choose one FAL (First Additional Language) and either Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, for a total of 4 core subjects.
One subject should be chosen from each group, for a total of 3 elective subjects.
Brief notes on the subjects offered at Hudson Park in the Further Education and Training Phase can be accessed via the menu below.
We try to bring learners to the point where they can express themselves confidently, through both the written and the spoken word. As in all things, the more a learner engages with the language the sooner he, or she, will become proficient. We therefore encourage pupils to read isiXhosa books, magazines, and newspapers, and to speak the language at every opportunity. Joining our Qhayiya Multicultural Society will further enrich their experience.
IsiXhosa is one of the official languages of South Africa, and knowing the language will significantly increase personal effectiveness in the workplace, no matter what career is chosen. For the learner with a flair for the language, careers which may appeal include those of journalist, news reader, lawyer, radio analyst, actor, playwright, producer, court interpreter, lawyer, translator, and editor.
