FET Phase Notes

CORE SUBJECTS

These subjects are compulsory for all learners. They should choose one FAL (First Additional Language) and either Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, for a total of 4 core subjects.

ELECTIVE SUBJECTS

One subject should be chosen from each group, for a total of 3 elective subjects.

What Learners Gain

Practical scientific skills and research skills are developed in the learners, and we introduce a practical component at every possible opportunity so as to enhance the learning experience. At least one practical assessment takes place each term, in each grade. In the Fourth Term, all Grade 10 and 11 learners have a practical examination, based on the year's work.

Extension And Support

Our learners generally achieve impressive results in the NATIONAL LIFE SCIENCES OLYMPIAD which we enter each year, and which gives Hudsonians a chance to compete with fellow learners from South Africa and surrounding countries. The main aims of the competition are to encourage excellence, and to inspire young people to consider careers in Science and Technology.

In cases where learners need assistance, extra lessons are provided by our teachers, and peer-group tutoring can be arranged. Plenty of supplementary worksheets and past examination papers are also available.

Careers

Life Sciences help us to improve the quality and standard of living. It has applications particularly in health, agriculture, medicine, the pharmaceutical industry, and the food industry. A study of Life Sciences at school will thus lay the foundation for further study related to a vast array of careers.

Infrastructure

Our 3 laboratories have running water and flat work surfaces to support practical needs. Movable scientific equipment is held in dedicated store rooms and brought out as required. A laboratory technician assists in preparing our venues for lessons.
